NCDs Scientific Congress 2016 Updated

Theme : “The role of Multi-disciplinary approach in the management of Non-communicable Diseases (NCDs) in Africa”

Non-communicable diseases are increasingly recognized as a major global health challenge that requires a response by all sectors of society. The decision by the RBC, MOH, RAHPC, RMDC, NNMC, RPC, WHO and other partners to convene a health multi- professional meeting on non-communicable diseases in June 2015, with the participation of all Allied Health Professions, presents a unique opportunity for the full range of stakeholders to shape that response. The scientific congress will bring together a wide group of stakeholders to share views and experiences to date on the challenges and opportunities in non-communicable disease prevention, treatment and control.

The congress theme is inspired by the Africa Health Strategy 2007-2015 ; among other things states : “Nonetheless, the reality remains that Africa’s people face a huge burden of preventable and treatable health problems whose solutions are known, proportionately far beyond Africa’s share of the world’s population. The triple burden from communicable and non-communicable diseases and injury and trauma, including the social impact of these, has adversely affected development in Africa. In addition the alarming rate of growth of the burden of both death and disability from non-communicable diseases in Africa is ever more recognized, with chronic diseases becoming more prevalent, linked to demographic, behavioral and social changes and urbanization”.

Rwanda has seen significant improvement in its demographic and health status indicators with significant decline in maternal and infant mortality. The successful record in the fight against infectious diseases highlighted the need to tackle the NCDs as the life expectancy of Rwandans has increased, with significant energy geared towards control and prevention.
